You may have noticed that I haven't been blogging for a quite a while, and that BPP hasn't been updated in some time longer. Beauty Plus Power has been around since 2003 in various forms, a lifetime in web land.

I am very grateful to everyone who has participated in this site with me over the years, especially the innovative photographers and the gorgeous models who use to participate in our editorials, one of my favorite things about this site.

But now its 2010, and BPP is sorely in need of a makeover. Even if I could invest the funds I'd like to into making the site current, I wouldn't have the time to give it the love it needs. Running the site during its peak was a part time job and that's just not time I can apply anymore to this.

So, I am putting Beauty Plus Power, and it's siter site, FashionFitsMe.com up for sale. Fashion Fits Me needs virtually no technology updates, its got a newer, fresh look and a great back end system. What it needs is someone committed to curating and updating the datafeeds that power the shopping portal. If cared for properly, there is significant revenue potential just waiting to be tapped on FFM, particularly for someone who already has a web site with a large following.

Beauty Plus Power admittedly needs some more help bringing it into 2010 in terms of design. But the majority of its 600+ store listings are still around, so dusting off the directory listings and adding all the newest stores for plus size shopping would bring it back to life. It is, to my knowledge, still the most extensive shopping directory for plus size women on the web. If you were to incorporate reader reviews, up to the minute discount info, more images and updated store information into the existing structure, you'd be in charge of a powerful web resource for plus size women.

I am not looking to cash out huge on this sale, so even if you don't imagine you have the right kind of money to buy it, please let me know. I don't want to see this site fade away simply because I think there is still a lot of value in what is contained within it. I'd rather see it go to someone who loved it then let it get so dusty it can no longer help anyone.

I really look forward to hearing from you, my lovelies. Help me keep this site alive!

Pick and Ick: Silhouettes

Today brings another new post in my Pick & Ick series. Here is a good example of what drives me crazy about plus size stores - they'll have some piece of clothing that I am so crazy about and is so stylish, and yet then I'll look at the next page and find something that is so old school plus sizes from the days before plus stores sold flattering clothes that were meant to fit and not hide you. Today's pick & ick come from Silhouettes.

Pick: Allover Embroidered Maxi Dress - very pretty, great for summer, fab color

Ick: Poplin Big Shirt - I am not a fan of the "big shirt" concept, nor the crazy retro floral pattern. It's like bad seventies wallpaper.

Anna Scholz teams up with Jessica Svoboda

Jessica Svoboda is my absolute favorite plus size denim designer. Jessica's denim is second to none - her fit is always incredible and her styles are always on trend. Now Jessica has teamed up with her very good friend Anna Scholz on a denim collection.

The new annscholz by Jessica Svoboda denim is now available on AnnaScholz.com and it looks very exciting!

The jeans sell for between £ 115 and £ 135 and so far are available in three styles - a five pocket bootcut called "Blue Horizon", the "Mood Indigo" jeans with tummy slimming panel and the "Skinny Stretch" jean, which is exactly what it sounds like.

Full disclosure here: I am friends with Jessica and a casual acquaintance of Anna's as well but neither of them know I am writing this post. I actually became friends with both through my love of their clothes and have shopped them both for years. They are consistently two of the most stylish and top quality plus size designers I've ever come across. For them to merge their two designs into a piece of clothing is the fashion equivilent of Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt's DNA merging together to form their ridiculously beautiful children.

Tunic Time at Alloy

I often complain about the overuse of tunics in plus size stores. There is a certain kind of tunic, a loose flowy thing with a keyhole neckline that's been in every damn plus size store for the last 5 years.

But lately a more flowery, boho tunic has been popular with the skinnies. A lot of times it's almost like a mini-dress, and it makes me want to pull out my gladiator sandals and romp on the beach. Alloy has a ton of these and they are all available up to their fab XXXL.

Both the tunic dresses (and I use the term dress loosely because they are super teeny tiny short) above are also $40 at Alloy. I recommend wearing with short denim cutoffs (if you wear shorts) or cropped leggings.

Fun at Re/Dress

Many of you have probably heard about the vintage/thrift plus size store Re/Dress in Brooklyn. I am very sorry to say I'd actually never been, which is shameful because I have been friends with the owner Deb Malkin since the early days of Beauty Plus Power (before starting her store Deb worked for Alight.com).

Last week my dear friend Wendy Shanker, author of the The Fat Girl's Guide to Life and the upcoming "Are you my Guru? How Medicine, Meditation and Madonna Saved My Life" invited me to an event at Re/Dress.

So Re/Dress is every bit as fantastic as you've heard! I bought in some stuff to trade in, as they will give you store credit for gently worn (or new) plus size clothing in good condition. They took most of my stuff (they have high standards, which I appreciate, and found stains on a few of my things) and I left the rest to be donated to charity. I ended up with around $50 store credit and broke even with my purchases - a pair of Venezia (Lane Bryant) jeans - new with tags!, a pale blue courduroy jacket (looks like maybe from Target?) and a very cool silk patterned top with a beaded trim neckline from Avenue.

I very painfully left behind a custom made purple taffeta formal gown that was FANTASTIC but also $100, and considering I have no known opportunities at this point for a black tie event, I had to say no. I nearly caved because it fit me like a glove but it was reallllllly fancy, apparently it was someone's custom made weddding gown (a purple wedding, fab!).

I saw this fantastic super 80's black sweater with dolman sleeves and furry embellished appliques and a pair of fierce black heels with skulls on them and I told Deb she should hold them for Gabi of Young Fat & Fabulous when she comes for the YFF Conference - they reminded me of the styles I see on her blog. You can't see them very well in the pic unfortunately.

The event at Re/Dress was for a young Parsons designer, Alyssa Robert, who was showing a few pieces from her collection and doing a meet and greet. The event was fun and it was nice to see an enthusiastic young designer trying to make her way in plus sizes, although it was sad to hear how much resistance she's had from her teachers at Parsons in trying to design in plus. Good Luck Alyssa!

I was also thrilled at the event to see fellow plus bogger and author of "Lessons from the Fat-o-Sphere" Kate Harding and founder of Ful Figured Fashion week Gwen Devoe, among others.

Finally, and very exciting, Deb will be selling a few pieces from my new jewelry line, Sparklewing. I am doing a special deal there for Re/Dress shoppers where you can get my rings for $10 instead of the usual $15.

Calvin Klein Cardigan: Pick & Ick

So my new series is supposed to be Pick or Ick but I found a single item that embodies both.

Do I love this or do I hate it? On one hand, this open cardigan with the hanging down front is a style that I think is not really that flattering to plus girls. There is something about the drape of it that I think makes you look bigger. Plus the way my body is shaped, this conceals the parts of me that are small (waist)and emphasizes the parts that are big (hips). Combine that with horizontal stripes and it gets worse.

Yet at the same time I think this girl looks kind of chic. And I can picture some of the stylish plus bloggers like Sakina of Saks in the City rocking something like this. It looks young and fresh with a nod to nautical but yet a cosmopolitan feel; the kind of thing a celeb would be snapped wearing, clutching a starbucks and wearing oversized sunglasses.

So what is your thought? Pick or Ick?

New Series: Pick & Ick - Torrid

I was in an inspiration rut, as you know. Then I decided I'd write a post about Asos, a site that I normally LOVE, but mentioning a few things I didn't like that were for sale. I think part of being an honest blogger is admitting that even the brands you live for are not always going to meet your expectations.

But that doesn't mean they deserve to get trashed either. In my opinion, even the supposedly lamest plus size store will usually have at least one thing that I like, and even the hottest store will have at least one thing I don't want.

So welcome to my new series: Pick & Ick. Each installment will feature one brand/store and 2 items, my pick (an item I want/love) and my ick (one that I really don't like).

Today's Pick & Ick is the lovely Torrid. If you are in your twenties, particularly your early twenties, you might take Torrid for granted because it seems like its always been there. But it hasn't, at least not for girls my age (I'm 31). The first time I went in one I started crying because I'd never seen a store of plus size styles aimed at young, trendy women.

But like any store, Torrid can occasionally be hit or miss, particularly when copying straight size trends. Here's my pick & ick for them:

My Pick is the top on the left, because I think the neckline detail is really creative and fun, and I find the drape of the top to be one that tends to mask my tummy while still allowing me to show off my curves.

And then there's the Ick. Or in this case ICK. What's not wrong with this? It's a pepto colored lace trimmed rayon strapless blouson top/baggy shorts romper combo from yucktown. It is just so ..... no. You can't possibly look good, or trendy, or body flattering in this, can you?

I've got a specific style I work with for my body type and I tend not to divert. Skinny jeans were really hard for me to get into because I felt they were calling attention to the shape I've always tried to mask with a wider leg pant. Same thing with baby doll dresses - my best asset is my waist and hourglass shape, so I dont like having so much bagging in that area.

But sometimes I see things that I think no plus woman would really look that good in. I realize that some fatshionista can show me up with a picture of themselves wearing that style and change my mind, but I ran across a few things at ASOS Curve that I just can't get behind.

Dress One:

-I really dont want to look like I put a tutu on crooked. Especially not in that color. I mean, I vote no for this dress not just on the grounds of it being unflattering on a plus size person, but a skinny person as well. Nay.

Dress Two:

-The shape of the overall dress is flattering but why the lace over just one boob? And she doesn't look too busty and it's not even covering her entire bust. If you are chesty, this will definitely bisect your boob in a very unflattering way. And if it cups your whole boob, then I think you will just end up looking like a stripper. However, this is the one that I expect the most people will disagree with me on because I have a feeling it could be fierce-a-fied by the right person. I am just not that person.

Dress Three:

-This is a dress that I just don't think will be cute on a plus girl. It's so shapeless it's like a pale pink potato sack. I also don't think the square neckline is going to do a big busted or broad shouldered girl any favors. It hides any shape you might have.

I am having a little bit of an identity crisis these days. I've spoken about this before but I am really a different person then I was when I started this site. More than that, the internet and the plus size community are different than they were when I created this site in 2004.

There are a tremendous amount of plus size bloggers now, a lot of whom are vivacious, sexy, mostly unmarried girls, mostly in their 20s (yes, for every blogger like the ones I just mentioned I know there are some older/married/etc out there). They have better sense of style than I feel like I ever did, and they wear things they are braver than I ever was to wear - I mean, I didn't even know what "bodycon" was until I started reading their blogs. To imagine that there was a whole style for plus girls around wearing form fitting clothes! And they look hot doing it too!

Although Beauty Plus Power is still the largest plus size shopping directory on the internet, it's not one of the only ways to get information anymore, which I am happy about because it means that information is more widely available. I used to get hundreds of emails from girls writing to me about their finally finding a place to shop besides Lane Bryant, discovering real fashion options for the first time - and for them, fashion was just something besides a tent. I mean, I hear young people complain about Torrid not being "cool" enough anymore - it had just opened when I first started the site, and the first time I walked in to one, I started crying - because it was so new and different. Young plus size women today do not realize how lucky they are to have more options.

But that's weird for me too, because now I go online and see plus girls in cage skirts, european fashion, the latest trends, knee high boots and the works. Meanwhile most days I wear some plain bootcut jeans and flats to work with a simple top. Today I wore a dressy blouson top with an abstact floral pattern and a jeweled neckline and people kept asking me if I had plans after work (in other words, looking dressy was a departure from the usual). I've grappled with the question of whether what I have to say is relevant, and I think it's legitimate. Who really cares what I have to say?

Fashion is still something I love, something I covet....but priorities have re-defined that. With a fiscally responsible husband and a mortgage, I have to really think about everything I buy. Often I go for volume of items to feel like I've got a lot of different pieces, but then that means not getting my hands on more coveted pieces that are pricier.

With my long commute and my weekends booking faster then I can say boo, I shop in stolen moments. There is a small Century 21-esque shop a few blocks from my office that I pop in once every week or two and grab something cute for under $20. The other day I picked up a Dereon bra & panty set and an Oleg Cassini dress, all for $19.95. But it's not great for when you have a specific piece in mind.

The mall, which is only about 15-20 minutes away is a place I have precious little time for. I went last weekend at around 10am, and had about 3 hours to shop. Seems like enough but it wasn't. I ended up having to stall on my husband and I rushed through the whole experience so much that I got home and realized I had somehow bought 12 tops (very affordable ones, I assure you) and that seven of them were flowered and 4 of them were t-shirts. No pants, no shoes, no dresses, no skirts, no bathing suits - all things I was on the lookout for. Needless to say I have some returning to do, but who has the time?

And OOTD? I've done one ONCE. I never imagined anyone would care what I wore, and now that seems like it drives 90% of plus fashion blogs.

So where does that leave me? That's the part I am not clear on. Any ideas?

Seersucker is such a strange word. I've been dreaming about this seersucker jacket I saw in Macy's the other day and every time I think back to it, I am like, what does seersucker even mean? It sounds like a barnacle to me, which is funny since it is kind of a nautical look.

But I digress. Wikipedia defines Seersucker as "..a thin, all-cotton fabric, commonly striped or checkered, used to make clothing for spring and summer wear." Usually the fabric is white with a navy or black pinstripe to it. It is a very cute, light way to wear suiting in the summer and there are a lot of cute options out there now in plus sizes.

SO Crazy about Kiyonna New Arrivals

I just checked out the New Arrivals Section at Kiyonna and I am TOTALLY loving them. Kiyonna is fairly consistent in styles/fabrics etc so even though I always like the clothes, I don't always find them exciting per se. But there are a few really HOT things there right now. I love the pattern on this dress and you've got to know that pink and purple are my favorite colors!!! Plus I really like the two twisted ties at the waistline too, I think its very slimming.

Bold Biffi or Boring Biffi?

I was excited to see the plus size collections from Jessica Biffi for Addition Elle and MXM but am feeling underwhelmed.

A little background: Jessica Biffi was a contestant on Project Runway Canada, and is a plus size woman. After the show, she teamed up with those 2 plus size stores to create collections.MXM and Addition Elle are kind of like the Canadian Fashion Bug and Lane Bryant (Canadian girls - do you agree with my LB comparison?).

The lines were announced to much fanfare but when I went to check them out, they were just... ok. Listen, they are wearable. Cute, maybe even. But designed? No. They are standard plus size line fare, in my opinion. I want to see something hot, something exciting, something worth having her own capsule collection. These are just sort of meh.

What do you think, are you as underwhelmed as I am?

About a year and a half ago my husband and I bought a house. It has been incredibly awesome owning my own home, but it sure has changed my priorities. When we get extra money, I can't immediately throw myself at the mall because we may want to put it towards stainless steel appliances, or new blinds, or something else, well, not fashion related.

Pefect Fit Button - When Infomercials Work

I saw this Infomercial commercial a couple of weeks ago for "The Perfect Button" and thought it sounded brilliant. Then I saw it at Bed, Bath & Beyond in their "As Seen on TV" section and bought it. AND LOVE IT. Oh my god, this thing is fabulous to the millionth degree.

The concept is so simple I can't believe I didn't invent it myself:

For about $10 (that's how much I paid in B,B & B) you get 8 of these pin things that are the shape and size of buttons. Then you can pin them to your pants right near the existing button to make the pants either tighter or looser. I imagine that most of the people who buy them are doing it to help them fit into pants that are too tight, but I've used it for both.

I have this pair of black pants that I can't let go even though they are a little too loose - but now with the button I actually made them fit better. My favorite use for them so far - the "adjustable" concept I came up with. When I wear my tightest jeans, they always seem fine at the beginning of the day, but the longer I'm out and the more I've eaten during the day, they start getting a little bit squeezy. So when the feeling comes where I just want to rip them off and put on sweatpants, I switch them to the looser setting. Fab, right?

My Creative Space

To take a break from my regular posts, I thought I'd show you a little bit of me, or that is, the room I sit in when I do most of blogging. When we moved into our house last year I was so excited to get my own office (we have 4 bedrooms - a big contrast to our old apartment in Brooklyn! and since we currently no kiddies we each got an office). After much thought I painted it a light pink. I am a purple girl by nature and have always painted my creative spaces in that color, but I thought I'd go for a change.

This is the wall next to my computer. I got the mirror for a $1 at a yard sale. The flowers on the mirror are actually fabric pins that I make. I have about 20-30 that I've done so far. I make them to relax, and hope to get good enough to maybe sell them at some point. For now I just make them for myself and my friends. The photos in are of my husband and I at our wedding, and then a little framed pic of my adorable nephew Jonah.

In addition to making flower pins I have also experimented with making flower necklaces. This is my favorite one I made so far. It's made out of necktie I got at another yard sale (um, I love yard sales).

Here is one of my most prized possessions - my Prada shoe (yes, I have the other one too). These shoes were released in the late nineties when I was in college. I coveted them so badly but they were $550, an insane amount of money at the time (ok, still a completely insane amount of money that I can't afford). I thought about them a lot in the years after that. Then when I was in my mid twenties, they re-released these shoes limited edition when the Prada flagship opened in Soho. I got the last pair in a size 8. I wear them on special occasions but keep them mostly on my bookshelf to admire. Naturally, they are on the chick lit shelf.

So my questions for you:

Ok, don't pass out from shock. I was rocking my new LucieLu shirt and wearing this cute boyfriend blazer with rolled up sleeves and my fave cameo necklace and I thought - I need to take a picture of myself!

Yes, I realize my posture could be better, I am slouching on my desk. Also, I wear glasses - not a surprise to anyone who's met me but I never wear them in pics. And yes, I think the blazer kind of hides the shirt too much but it was too cold for me to wear the tee without it.

Full disclosure: I contacted LucieLu after I learned about their line and asked to see some pieces. Take a Second Look: Plus Size Fix

I don't know why I always forget about PlusSizeFix.com They have cute, cheap trendy plus size clothes online but when I am looking at my "go-to" sites for clothes I often don't think of them, and I plan on prioritizing. I got reminded of them the other day by a twitter friend when I was looking for stores with plus size motorcyle jackets. I went to the site and saw a ton of items I covet. Note: Don't be frightened by freakishly overairbrushed models on the homepage, just dive straight into the clothes.

The most expensive thing in any of the pictures is the Motorcyle Jacket, and that's only $68! Most of the tops are under $35, and most of the dresses are around $45.

So I guess all of us plus size ladies are going to have to start riding Harleys. Motorcyle Jackets are EVERYWHERE. I called them recently as a spring trend but was only able to find a few examples online. Now, only weeks later they are on every site. And I want one. Is that so wrong? Here are some options:

The Kenneth Colejacket on the left is not leather, it's denim! It's really cute and currently on sale at Nordstroms, $72 reduced from $109.

The NY Collection jacket from Macys.com is also not leather, it's a poly/spandex blend and only $64.

I love the slate gray J Jill soft leather jacket but its unfortunately out of my price range at $369.

The three jackets from Evans UK are fabulous, but what else can we expect from Evans? And yes, they ship to the US.

Now, this might surprise you, but my choice is actually the Slant Zip Moto jacket from Hot Topic:

At $42 its very affordable (yay) and also, and this is my favorite part - made of SWEATSHIRT material!! I like style, but I only do style if its comfy, and this just screams comfort. I also think the assymetrical zip is super cute.

Glamour To Put Crystal Renn on the Cover!

*Gabby Sidibe & Monique getting tons of press and awards for Precious (and lots of red carpet looks that plus size women can actually buy!)

*V Magazine did a plus size issue with Gabby on the cover and several amazing plus size model spreads

*Marie Claire, one of my favorite magazines, launched a monthly article about plus sizes by a size 20 fashionista Ashley Falcon....and then MC took it a step further by reaching out to plus readers and fashion bloggers to find out what else we want

*Bergdorf Goodman in NYC has started to quietly sell plus sizes from select designers (mixed in with the straight sizes)

*Vogue Italia launches Vogue Curvy online

*Designer Mark Fast puts plus size women in two subsequent runway shows (although in the second one, they didn't look so hot...but still, an effort)

*Glamour, triggered by overwhelming reader response to a small picture of plus model Lizzie Miller with a tummy roll, pledges to use more plus models in their magazine.

And now the latest news.... Glamour is putting their money where their mouth is....Famous plus size model Crystal Renn is going to featured on the COVER of the June issue of Glamour Magazine!

Before you pass out from joy, I will note that she won't grace the cover alone (although she could rock it) but will be with very famous straight size model Alessandra Ambrosio and Sports Illustrated covergirl Brooklyn Decker.

Northstyle - Who are you?

So I may have blogged about Northstyle once before. I randomly came across their catalog one day at the office and at first glance, the clothes seemed a bit country quaint. You know, lots of florals, paisley... the kind of site that will have big brimmed hats and overly enthusiastic cardigans.

So here's the thing - Northstyle does have stuff like that. But then they also have stuff that I totally covet.

Like the Leather Austin Bag:

It's the perfect cowgirl chic piece. And it's only $129, which in handbag land, is affordable.

And check out this dress, which I am pretty sure I am going to order. The Ruched Waist Dress is an affordable $69.

I think you have to go visit this dress on their site and zoom in. The ruching is really pretty and the shape looks very flattering. They have it up to size 20.

NorthStyle does straight sizes up to a size 20, and then they up to 3X in their plus size section. Like you would in a thrift store, be prepared to do some browsing, as not everything may tickle your fancy, but I think there are definitely some possibilities for you.

Anna Scholz Black/White Label

I am a little late in posting about Anna Scholz's debut of her lower priced Black Label collection, which I have been poring over online. I also got to see her Fall 2010 White and Black Label collections and visit with Anna herself when she was in town doing trunk shows for Fashion Week. Seeing Anna always makes me happy, she's like a bright shiny beam of light. She has a fabulous laugh, gorgeous blond hair and a great eye for style. If you think Spring 2010 is fierce (which it is) wait until you see Fall 2010!

I've liked Tahari clothing for a long time, and they've toed the plus size fashion waters for a while. Recently I've noticed both Macys and Bloomingdales carrying plus size Tahari merchandise, and what I've seen is quite nice.

Tahari does great structured suits, and his plus line is no exception. There is a small selection of suits, all around the $300 mark.

Take a Second Look: Igigi

I've been familiar with the Igigi brand for many years but other than a lovely formal dress I wore to my friend's wedding several years ago, I haven't really bought anything from them in a while.

I've been hearing that the brand has undergone a relatively major overhaul in the last few years, so I wanted to check it out again. It looks like dresses are still their primary focus but they also have a few tops, jackets and skirts.

They also still have the absolutely stunning Fluvia modeling for them. I am a big fan of Fluvia, she modeled for Beauty Plus Power from the beginning, as long ago as 2003-2004 and she continues to look flawless today! Also, because of her very curvy figure, you definitely get a good sense of the way clothes will fit on a plus size body.

Dorothy Perkins Spring Dresses

UK store Dorothy Perkins has some seriously cute dresses in for Spring 2010. Dorothy Perkins clothes don't come in plus sizes, but they sell up to a UK 22, which is about an 18, maybe a 20 US depending on how you are proportioned. The 22 has measurements of a 48-42-51 which is quite generous. However, since shipping is a bit steep (£10 or about $15) make sure to measure yourself and think of the style carefully when ordering in terms of how it will fit your body. If the size doesn't work out once it arrives, sell on ebay or to a friend so that you don't lose out!

I really want this dress (would probably wear as tunic top) but the biggest size they have left is a 14, which would only fit a 40 inch hip, and mine is at least a 42 I think.... I am still debating.

Lots of good stuff on site left in the larger sizes tho, so take a look!

Statement Jewelry

My wardrobe has far more basics than I care to admit. My staples are jeans and black pants, and in the winter I wear a rainbow of cashmere turtlenecks, and in the summer? Go BOLD - Prints in Force

Apparently the plan for early spring is that your clothes should scream out loud. Prints are everywhere, the bigger, bolder, crazier and more randomly placed the better. To make sure this trend works for your plus size body, consider placement and proportion. Since I've got a teeny waist and big hips, I wouldn't splash the boldest part of the print across my booty (well, unless I just wanted to draw some more attention there than it already gets). Similarly, if you're very busty, watch where the layout of a print or pattern falls across your chest to make sure it doesn't get distorted. And for those with tummy concerns, you're in luck, since a lot of these prints will obscure a bit of the roll action!

Spring Trend: Yellow at I.N.C.

I.N.C. is a Macy's house brand that has been supplying plus size women with clothes long before anyone else was offering us trendy. I.N.C. also comes in straight sizes up to XL, so it's really a line that carries across from S-3X.

Right now I.N.C. is showing LOTS of yellow for spring and I have to say I am feeling it. I have to admit that I don't wear much yellow - I feel like with my pale skin its a tough color to wear. However, while I write this, I am currently wearing an electric hot pink sweater (from another great house brand - Sutton Studio Cashmere from Bloomingdales), so perhaps I should realize I am not color shy and get with the program.

More Plus Sizes at QVC

In last week's post, I covered Chloe Dao's line for QVC, which I am completely in love with. But there are other designers doing nice things for the formerly unhip television shopping network.

Outfit 1 is from the Edition by Erin Fetherston line. I love the pleating detail on the white top and the belt is great for showing off the waist. I paired it here with a pair of Rialto Scrunch Boots (not wide calf) and gave it a pop with a Robert Verdi Weekender Satchel which is on clearance now for only $67.

Outfit 2 is a more classic look also from Erin Fetherston. Sometimes I feel like the toughest arena to get plus size clothes for is business casual. There are designers out there doing great things for formal & semi formal occasions, plus stores that make great funky graphic tees and casual looks, but modern, on trend work clothes can be tricky. I paired the look with a clutch and and some heels but you could rock with a briefcase and flats too.

Outfit 3 is from M by Marc Bouwer. The faux leather jacket is a major spring trend and is only $54! I paired it with some really bright purple pants, also from this line.

In addition to Marc Bouwer and Erin Fetherston, QVC is also carrying lines from Rachel Zoe and Isaac Mizrahi. As I've mentioned before, QVC generally requires the designers to make from a size Small all the way through a 3X (although for some reason they are carrying a BCBG line that only goes up to XL?) so this is generally a great way to get designer diffusion lines in plus sizes at affordable prices! Italian Plus Size Designer Elena Miro has always showcased beautiful plus sized clothes on gorgeous plus models, so it's no surprise that she has done it again for Milan Fashion Week. However, coming on the heels of Mark Fast's awful fit on plus size models including Crystal Renn on the London Fashuion week runway, I think it's nice to see plus models in clothes that were fit well. I am not ectastic about what Elena is showing in her Fall 2010 line, it has a sort of coldness to it and seems a little retro secretary meets 80s, but I think there were a few nice looks.

Missing the Mark (Fast)

Mark Fast is a British fashion designer known for his knitwear - but known far more than that for showing a few looks on plus size models at not one but 2 consecutive fashion shows at London Fashion Week. The first time he did it, rumor has it that a few of his staffers quit over his use of plus size women in the show. The press had an absolute field day with the story, and when seeing how lovely those curvy models looked, you could safely feel outraged yourself.

However - if I heard that a staffer quit over plus models in this show, I don't know that I'd be outraged. Because maybe they'd be quitting in horrible, horrible shame over putting some of the sexiest women in the world into clothes that turned their beautiful curvy forms into a mockery of squeezed, squooshed unflattering flesh. Don't believe me? On the left is Crystal Renn in one of many hundreds of beautiful photos of her glorious figure. On the right, Crystal Renn squeezed into a hideous red sausage casing at the Mark Fast show. There are not enough words.

In fact, the picture on the left is an old Lane Bryant image, which I think is a few years old (and oh, by the way, I totally have that lingerie set, it's so cute!) and she may have actually been heavier then. These days I think Crystal is maybe a size 12. But I am pretty sure they've got her squeezed into their straight size sample. The boobs: squashed, the stomach: pooched, the hips: all over the place. UGH. The weird thing is, other than some of my plus size friends/bloggers, most of the articles I've been reading are trying so hard to be positive to the plus size movement (and I do thank them for their enthusiasm) that no one is pointing out the obvious of how much more impact these looks could have had if they fit correctly!

Chloe Dao for QVC

Do you remember Chloe Dao, Season 2 winner of Project Runway? She had a great, fun style that I really liked and she was clearly a smart businesswoman to boot. After her win, she went back to her (already successful) store in Houston to continue her career. She's done a lot since then, most recently created a lower priced line for QVC.

I had actually planned on making this blogpost about a number of QVC designers, including isaac Mizrahi and Erin Fetherston, but I am going to have break up the post because Chloe had SO MANY cute pieces I wanted to make a pretty princess collage of just her pieces for you. What I love about designers for QVC is that they have to do their pieces in sizes Small through 3X, and Chloe's items are no exception. Meaning that every piece I show you here is available in plus sizes!!

Props to Debenhams & Their Mannequins

It was announced this week that UK Department store Debenhams will start featuring some size 16 mannequins in their store windows. Although 2010 seems like the year of everything plus size and fabulous, this announcement is still considered breaking news as they are the only UK department store to do such a thing.

Well, if it's noteworthy, then we'd like to note it, and give a big THANK YOU to Debenhams. If you've haven't shopped in their stores (for you UK girls) now is the time to show them you appreciate that they are recognizing us! Unfortunately they do not ship to the US at this time :(

Check out the size 16 mannequins. By the way it should be noted that a UK 16 is about a US 12-14, so these aren't even truly plus size mannequins!

Stop Staring Plus Sizes

Stop Staring makes vintage style dresses, almost all of them body conscious designs that they say "empowers women by embracing and celebrating their female form".

They have a nice selection of plus size dresses included on their site. Their standard dresses go up to a size 18 (which for some reason they call a "3X" on their site) but they also make a selection of their dresses available up to size 26. Not all the plus size dresses are available in all sizes, but we'd advise calling to find out more if you see a style you really want to buy. If you like body con retro looks, you'll be happy with this line!

Take a Second Look: Ulla Popken

I am starting a new blog series called "Take a Second Look". It is reserved for lines that I've overlooked in the past. In most cases I reviewed them years ago and find now that my opinion has changed but for whatever reason, I want to make sure I put them on your radar in case you've done the same.

My first retailer of the series is Ulla Popken. I haven't featured them much in the past because I felt that their clothes were targeting an older demographic than the standard Beauty Plus Power reader. In the past year I've seen a lot of changes to their product mix. Yes, there are still some 40+ looks going on, still some elastic and some loose fit clothing but there are also some sincerely cute/trendy/fun things happening too.

By the way, I've just fallen in love with Polyvore.com, a site that let's you make little sets out of items you pick from the web. Sort of like a collage software. Maybe you heard of this years ago, but it's all new to me, and I LOVE IT! Here is my Ulla Popken set!

If you don't fit H & M, part 2

In Monday's post I touched on how to rock H&M style in plus sizes. In responses to some emails and comments I got about the post, the answer is that no, they don't have H & M plus sizes in the US anymore, they discontinued them in 2005-2006. I think now would be a FANTASTIC time to bring them back, personally :) On to some more tips.

3) Sequins are still shining

There are still lots sequins, glitter & pailettes on the racks at H&M. If you're the more modest type, you could wear a sequin cami (pictured on the left) and pair it with a cardigan or a denim jacket. The halter on the right could also be worn with something over it, or could make a bold, sexy statement if paired with a body conscious pencil skirt.

4) Pay attention to the waist

Tops are either short or super long and paired with belts. Dresses are nipped at the waist or have elastic bands sewn in to further enhance. Jackets are cropped or have peplums.

The moral of this story is that you can find affordable trends in plus sizes. While it would certainly be nice if H&M would provide cute plus sizes, in the meantime, with little effort, you can definitely get the look in plus on a budget.

If you don't fit H & M, part 1

Hubby and I perused H&M today and I thought I'd translate some of their cheap trends for plus girls. Most of these are obviously trends that are already out and about. I'm not breaking any new ground here, but these are still good alternates for what's in store for the thin.

On a sizing note, I have 45 inch hips and fit into not one but all 3 of the size 14 dresses I tried on there (although 1 did not fit my 36C boobs - what's up with that?)

1) Floral is a must.

Every fashion mag has got this going on and it's true. Floral, in particular floral dresses are everywhere - mostly bold colors and patterns. I am seeing small & medium sized florals more than the bigger or abstract styles. Many have a very vintage-y feel. A couple of options in plus:

Note: Each have the potential to make you look like a grandma, and if you are very top heavy, one of those old bosom-y grandmas. Make sure jewelry, shoes & hair are on point to keep you looking young and cute.

2)The eighties are not only alive and well, they are coming to get you and clubbing you over the head into submission.

Walking through H&M I felt like I was in an elementary school flashback (I was born in 1978). I refuse to go full eighties (although there are some amazing young Fatshion bloggers out there who rock the hell-o out of it) so if you are like me I recommend some softer influence here:

This is eighties done subtle - a pop of retro in that flirty shoulder detail, but otherwise a simple, drapy top. I would avoid this style if you are very broad shouldered ,but if you want to draw attention up to your face, this will definitely do it and would like great with an updo.

Right: LucieLu Buffalo Plaid Skirt, $36
The Buffalo plaid trend is alive and well, but not everyone can succesfully wear a button down shirt (I always feel like they don't work well on me). So I like the idea of the buffalo plaid skirt, and then you can pair it with a casual black top, a big necklace and some shoe boots.

I thought I was going to be one of the first to break the news, but when I googled LucieLu to get more scoop then what was available on site, I find that my darling Kate Harding of ShapelyProse.com has already beat me to the punch, having posted about this site on Friday! She also said that the designer is a former B&Lu buyer, which totally makes sense now when I see the line.

What Would You Wear to the Oscars?

There have been lots of plus size celebs at award shows lately looking pretty hot. But I say they can do better! If you, as a plus size fashionista, had a chance to go to the Oscars, what would you wear? I am not talking about a fantasy gown that you can't find, let's talk about real actual dresses available for us right now.

eDressMe.com has some of the ABSOLUTE BEST dresses available for plus sizes. I think I've mentioned them before, they sell a lot of dresses that are used as bridesmaids gowns so they are often available up to size 30 (think Gabby Sidibe from Precious) although some of the ones pictured below only go up to a 16, 18, or 20. UK is where its at for plus size clothing these days. They've got Asos, Evans, Yours Clothing and many more that make me want to hop the first plane to London.

One of the UK brands that is really shining to me right now is New Look. Although shipping to the US is pricy (about $12) the clothes themselves are very affordable, so that the total cost is still equal or less than shopping at a store like Lane Bryant - and chances are that no one will have what you've got! Here are some things I'd like to pick up:

This perfume bottle T-Shirt reminds me of a Marc by Marc Jacobs or and is only £12.00, which translates to about $19 US:

This top to me is like 80's style done right - not a rip off but an update. I think this top would look great with some skinny black pants and a great bow headband. Or maybe belt it and wear with a short black skirt and some fishnets. It's only £16.00, $25 US.

I really like this bow sweater - you can't really tell from the small picture but the bow detail is studded, which I think adds some fun edge to the look. It's £25.00, US $39. It also comes in Royal Blue, Grey, Red and Pink!

This jacket is called the "Foxy Parka" and I can see why. Even though it's a jacket, it has this really fun edge to it with the high neck, the tab sleeves and the military-ish color. I picture it with a bunch of bangle bracelets, a faded pair of skinny jeans, and some mod cowboy boots. The jacket is £35.00, or $55 US.

Gabby Sidibe Gets Love from Designers

It's getting easier to be a plus size woman in Hollywood. The very plus Gabourey Sibide, actress and star of the critically aclaimed film Precious, has been getting some fabulous gowns designed for all the award shows from the likes of Kevan Hall, Tadashi Shoji, and David Meister. I encourage you to support designers who support us! Gabby has chosen designers who do plus size lines, as opposed to straight size designers who only make plus sizes when a celebrity is involved. Go Gabby!

Here is Gabby in Kevan Hall at the Golden Globes:

I think this dress is very pretty, I love the green with her skin. But I'd have preferred the neckline just a little bit lower to open her up a little more, and then the sleeves just a touch shorter. It also looks like it is too long on her, and if that's a train, I don't think it was necessary for this dress. But overall, a nice look.

Gabby wore this Tadashi Shoji dress below to an awards show recently, but I didn't feel like it flattered her shape when I saw the photos. I think this works better for an hourglass than her figure, which is more of an apple.

If I had $550 and a wedding to go to, there is no doubt in my mind that I would own this Tadashi Shoji dress, it is breathtaking:

Gabby has also been dressed by David Meister. Like Tadashi Shoji, you can find this line at Saks. Here is one of his designs, which is also tragically expensive ($530) but stunning. It is made of jersey, which might make it a bit clingy on the lumps&bumps, but it's lined, which does usually help and its ruched, which makes it more flattering. I think Gabby would look fabulous in this dress with the right undergarments.

Black & White & Edgy All Over

I keep finding much more stylish, edgy pieces on line in plus sizes. I've had a lot of double takes lately, because I can't believe they are finally making these things in plus! Unfortunately, it's hard to put my money where my mind is on these, because a lot of them are beaucoup bucks. But hey, it gives me something to aspire too - I rarely find a plus designer piece to covet. Here are more than a few!

Why they shot this Stizzoli top (above) with such a dark skirt that it looks like a dress, I don't know. But just the top is $500. And yes, that's actual fringe, not a pattern. LOVE IT.

What I like about the Adrienne Vittadini white top above is that the proportion of the design is the right size and position for plus size bodies. If a pattern or print is done too small or in the wrong place, it can totally ruin the whole look. I'd be careful with the Evans top to make sure the girl's eyes in the drawings don't hit weird places on your bust line.

Tahari "Eliza" Leather Jacket, $1,298 (ouch!)

The leather jacket is mega expensive but the leather looks delicious, Tahari makes quality, and a leather jacket is a wardrobe staple. This still would not justify me buying it (what with my mortgage and all) but if you've got the money, I say go for it!!! With some dark wash jeans and a pair of black booties, you would look hot. What do you think?

Planning Ahead - Swimsuits

My husband I just booked a trip to Belize for this summer and of course I've now become fixated on the need for summery clothes and swimsuits. I was perusing the selection available now, which really isn't bad! Winter is a popular travel season to warm climates, so retailers need to have some items available. Here are a few bathing suits I am considering for the trip:

A new swimsuit:

On the left is the Miraclesuit "Rock the Croc"
Swimsuit, $144 at Nordstrom. I think the pattern is very cute and could also be forgiving in the belly area. The suit on the right is Alloy Ring Front One Piece which is a lot more affordable at $49.99. My only concern would be the possibly funny ring tan line.

The suit on the left is the Lane Bryant Balconette Swim Top
, which is $59.50. I think this would be the most flattering of all the suits because it's actually got a real bra top in it and that is my number one complaint in swimsuits - not getting the support I want. The suit on the left is also Lane Bryant, Retro One Piece Swimsuit, $99.50. This is a really sexy suit, very retro and I think would popular with the hubby.

Kaycee Stroh - Celebrity Fit Club - Why?

I'll admit, I like watching reality weight loss shows. The Biggest Loser in particular is quite compelling, I like seeing people learn that they are strong enough to conquer their weight issues. I always think they get too skinny at the end to try and win... but overall I think it helps a lot of people on the show and off.

Celebrity Fit Club is another weight loss show I watch although I don't find it particularly inspiring. It's primarily comprised of B or C level celebs who have fallen into a slump, both professionally and well, physically. A lot of them are former skinnies - I think they've had at least 2 former Baywatch babes and some 80s rockers. They've been promoting the most recent season recently and one of the celebrities is Kaycee Stroh.

Kaycee's major claim to fame is a supporting role in the High School Musical movies. I've never seen the films, but I keep an eye out for plus size celebs. She has been a model for Torrid (what young plus size celeb hasn't??) and has always appeared looking cute and fashionable. While I have no issue with anyone trying to get healthier (and that can often involve losing weight - I've done that myself), I can't help but feel a little dissapointed that she is going on this show.

Kaycee isn't a former skinny trying to reach the looks of her golden years. She entered the scene as a plus size woman, and to change that changes her. It's a tough situation - one part of me wants her to be able to chose to be whatever size she wants to be, whether its a 4 a 14 or a 24. Another part of me feels that celebrities who gain their fame as plus size women, and become role models for other plus size women, do have a certain kind of responsibility. Sucks, I know and kind of hypocritical of me too. But I can't help but think it.

Belts & Boots

I did it. I started wearing skinny jeans. I never thought I'd succumb to the trend, but lately, I've been rocking it, and feeling pretty good.

I think the trick to them, especially for a wide hipped girl like me, is really finding the right things to wear them with. My pick - a waist slimming belt, and a pair of big, fun boots. I prefer stretch belts as they are more comfy to wear during the day, and big boots because they provide some balance to the hips.

For boots, I have trouble with heels, even though I totally want to rock them like a sexy bitch (haha). I have been wearing these giant fur boots that make me look a little ridiculous, yet I love them. I've also been doing sweater boots, because you can scrunch them like leg warmers. Neither of mine are specifically billed for wide calves because both have the flexibility to fit a variety of sizes. The ones below are similar to the boots I've been wearing.

Done right, almost any trend can be adaptable to plus sizes - but don't force it if it's not working. I waited a long time to find a skinny jeans look that worked for me, and even still I am not always convinced I wouldn't look better in my old boot cut jeans. But that's why they call them trends - they don't last forever, so if you want to experiment, I say go for it, just don't spend too much money on them, so if you aren't happy you don't have an empty wallet!

V Magazine Sneak Peak

By now I am guessing you've read about the upcoming plus size issue of cutting edge fashion magazine V. V calls itself a magazine about "Fashion with a capital F". This upcoming issue, the F could stand for.... (no, not fat!) Fluffy. Or fabulous. It's filled with sexy pictures of beautiful plus size models, shot in cutting edge fashion spreads.

I've been reading tons of articles online about the upcoming issue, most of which are complaining for one reason or another. There are those who have issue with a shoot comparing the same fashions on a plus and straight size model (and the plus model is gorgeous top model Crystal Renn). I think the comparison is lovely and thought provoking, whereas the critcism I've read paints it as wrong that they would have to be side by side, as if the comparison is a critcism. Others are complaining that by separating the plus size models into a different, special themed issue, they aren't treating them the same as straight size models...the complaints go on and on.

Honestly? I'm just happy to see hot plus size models in cool clothes shot and styled by incredible photographers, makeup artists, and stylists appearing in a major and well respected magazine. I think it's progress. Major progress. So I will celebrate it for that and not get political. Check out some sneak peaks:

eShakti - Affordable Custom Made Clothes

I was contacted recently by the nice folks at eShakti.com, wondering if I knew about their line. Their business model is really interesting - they essentially do mass customization. What I mean by this is that they have their own line of clothes on their site, priced affordably, that look ready to buy. However, when you go to order you specify exactly what your measurements are and they make it to size for just $10 more (standard sizing comes at no additional cost)!

Full disclosure here - eShakti offered to custom make me a piece of clothing of my choice so I could try the line out. As with any offer like this I always make sure the brand knows that I will review it honestly and not just post a glowing review. That being the case, I went ahead and ordered this dress:

This is the Ruffle Front Wrap Dress, which sells for $49.95. plus $10 for the customization. This means that for $59.95 you get a custom made dress - very affordable in my opinion. Below you can read my review.

Shipping time: Even though it comes from India, it shipped really fast - it arrived in about a week, including the time it took them to make it, which is impressive. I will say that the dress arrived in a box the size of a book, and was therefore a bit wrinkled from having been a bit smooshed. However, this small package probably reduced the shipping fee, which for an order of my cost was only $8.95.

The Fit: I was very impressed with the fit of the dress. I have a true hourglass figure, with a waist that on average is about 12 inches or more smaller than my hips. As a result, I have to tailor most of the dresses I get. I chose a wrap dress, which is traditionally flattering to my figure - but when I inspected the cut of the dress I saw all the ways that they made it more flattering for my exact shape - I told them I was high waisted, so the band at the waist was set high, just under the bust - the perfect place for it, making my waist look even smaller. The wrap part of the dress itself was cut at an angle to account for my wide hips, so that the dress wouldn't gap when it was tied. That was one of the most clever parts in my opinion.

Dress Quality & Style: The dress was made of something they called "cotton satin" which I had some aprehension about before ordering, as I had a feeling that this was a type of fabric I generally avoid. It's a very thin, fine polished cotton. It's quite a popular material for summer dresses but for me personally I find it too much like linen in it's wrinkle potential. Indeed, particularly with the dress being shipped in the tiny box, it was wrinked on arrival. The collar of the dress, which is a bit hard to see in pictures, has a fun ruffle to it which was so funky from the shipping that at first I thought I did not like the style of it all. After I was able to smooth it down I saw how cute it was, and I think the dress is going to look really lovely after a good steaming/pressing. It is definitely only a summer fabric however.

Summary: The dress fits beautifully, looks like the picture and was very affordable. If they were to make dresses out of fabrics like jersey, I'd most likely buy about 10 more. I am not certain if I'd order another item in the cotton satin again, but this is truly a personal preference. I am probably going to order a pair of their poly/spandex pants for myself soon to try those. There a lot of really nice clothing designs on their website, and with the customization available in sizes 0-26 I would definitely recommend this brand to others. As soon as I get my dress steamed I will post a pic of me wearing it.

I've been missing in action lately. I've sort of taken the holiday off from blogging and much of my online life - twittering, site updates etc. I've been feeling guilty about it but then I realized something... you'll be ok without me. I started the original version of Beauty Plus Power in 2003, which makes me sort of a web grandma. Back when I started, it was me and maybe Kelly Bliss (of the plus size yellow pages - which I think is also still around). There was hardly anyone with a plus size site, fashion or otherwise. Torrid was in its infancy. Many of our favorite plus size designers, shopping sites and blogs didn't exist.

The beginning years were fun because of how new everything was. I got to meet a lot of plus size celebrities, had boxes of free plus size designer clothes delivered to my door, went to interesting parties and got some great press. The most fun part of all of it was sharing all of the fashion sites I found with other plus size women. And I was able to meet so many of my readers as well as plus size entrepreneurs, business people and fashion lovers. Some of my best friends are people I met as a result of me having this site.

But things have changed in my world and the plus world. Since launching this site as a single, size 20, twenty something plus size girl, I've gotten married, lost 60 pounds, embarked on a new career I love (day job), bought a house, moved to the surburbs and entered my thirties (gasp). And in the plus world, I may still be useful (to my knowledge no one has as comprehensive of a plus size shopping directory as BPP does) but I am, I guess, not as exciting.

In the old days, I'd get emails from girls all over the world practically in tears thanking me for helping me them finally find a place to shop for trendy clothes. Recently, I wrote a young, trendy plus size blogger I've been following and asked if she'd add my site to her site links. She politely said that she can't add all the sites that ask her to add them, and that if something really interested her on my site she'd be sure to link to it. Boy, did I feel like somebody's uncool mom that day. But then I realized, hey, it's ok. The fact that this blogger has a universe of plus size stuff cooler than me out there is a good thing. I mean, you should see the fabulous clothes she wears. In my day (see, I am old) we didn't have those choices. And BPP has always been about giving girls a choice. So while I hope people will continue to visit Beauty Plus Power (and follow me on Twitter and visit my newer site, the plus size shopping portal FashionFitsMe.com), I know that if I want to be out of the picture for a while, you'll have plenty of other places to go.

What I bought - NY & Company

One of my favorite stores to shop is New York & Company. It can definitely be a bit hit or miss, some days there are tons of things I want there, some days none. I like the fact that you can buy online and then bring to the stores if you need an exchange or return. They are having some crazy sales right now and so I bought a few things and they just arrived today. Here is what I bought (sorry about the "great gift" thing, it comes up on a lot of their pictures):

I bought this Argyle Cardigan in grey with hot pink but they are sold out of that color right now. They still have this green one available along with a few other color combos. What I love right now - Music & Crafts

I am a bit of an obsessive person. I get hooked on something, be it a particular food, music, expression or type of clothing, and I just sort of go wild - listening to the same album multiple times a day, going to yard sales every single weekend, or having a bag of jolly ranchers in the house at all times. Here are a few of my latest obsessions:

MUSIC: Right now it's a toss up between 2 albums that I listen to over and over.

One is Ocean Eyes by Owl City. I know that the singer has been compared endlessly to The Postal Service, another of my favorite bands, and while I agree, I think the two groups have a pretty different sound despite some commonalities. Ocean Eyes is a fun, quirky electro

The other album I love is Man on the Moon by Kid Cudi. Kid Cudi is an innovative rapper with lyrics that sound honest and self aware as opposed to rap's usual pompous swagger (although don't get me wrong, I love that kind of rap too). There is almost a sci fi quality to this album (Perhaps, intentional, with the Man on the Moon title) and although I usually hate between song spoken interludes, the rapper Common, who has a really delicious speaking voice, makes it an important addition to the overall feel of the album.

ACCESSORIES: So I've dived headfirst into the world of crafts. I have become obsessed, I think capital O level, with making pins. I use either fabric twisted into flower shapes, or petals from ripped apart vintage or dollar store flowers that I reassemble into quirky, pretty creations. If you've been wondering why I haven't been blogging, its because I've been sitting on my couch every night sewing for hours to make new pins to wear every day!! I need to photograph some of my recent collection to show you, but in the meantime, here's someone who's doing things with flower crafts I'm not even creative enough to think of:

I've known about plus size line IGIGI for years, and have a great formal dress I bought from them several years ago for a wedding. But I hadn't visited their site in quite some time until my friend Heidi mentioned to me she had gotten some really awesome things there recently. I checked it out and was very surprised at how much the line has changed. I was really impressed with the collection, and I love any plus size designer who uses BPP fave model Fluvia, because she has some serious curves and it helps you understand how the clothes will really fit (that is, if you are an hourglass, which I for sure am like Fluvs - though not nearly as sexy).

I love this dress, modeled by the gorgeous Melissa (btw - both these ladies are former BPP editorial & calendar models!), which I think is perfect for work or a cocktail party, and the color is fabulous:

Kenley Collins: Now in Plus Sizes!

Do you love Project Runway like I do? Remember Kenley Collins? She was a finalist in Season 5 who had a tough attitude and a fun vintage sensibility to her clothes. Although she was sometimes a bit too outspoken (she talked back to Tim Gunn, who does that?) she was also clearly a passionate person and designer who had great style - and it showed in her own wardrobe, which you can see in her collection.

She has her own website: KenleyCollins.com and I have been following her on Twitter @kenleycollins ever since I learned that she had a plus size line in the works. It's now available on her website, and I was very excited to see that she didn't create some kind of alternate plus collection but just sized up her current season's garments in plus. All the pieces in her collection seem to be for sale up to size 24.

I have had the pleasure of meeting and working with Anna a few times and she is a fun, lively character - a big, voluptuous German blond with a true passion for fashion. Her designs are killer - one of my favorite pieces of clothing in the world is a peach colored Anna Scholz cashmere sweater I have with a black beaded scottie dog (her signature) on it.

Plus Size PJs at Bedhead

Now that the weather is getting colder, I can't just wear a t-shirt and shorts to bed anymore, I need something a bit snugglier. I am the kind of girl who wears my pajamas in the house as often as possible, I'll often throw them on after work when I get home just so I can feel more relaxed. A lot of times I wear fleece pants and an old sweater, but this year I am planning on checking out some quality PJ options. I am pretty impressed by the selection at Bedhead, the pajamas are really pretty and made of nice soft materials like sateen and flannel. Two things to note that are not ideal: The delivery time for these PJs is 4-6 weeks (perhaps they are made to order?) and they aint cheap - I'm talking $80-130+ for the average pair. In Honor of Halloween: Orange Clothes

Are you planning on dressing up for Halloween this year? Since it falls on Saturday, a lot of people who might normally dress up for work will probably not do so this year on Friday. However, I suspect a lot more people than usual will go to Halloween parties this year, or dress up to go trick-or-treating with their kids.

I am not so sure I'm dressing up this year - I thought about it, but I really don't know that we'll be going out. However, it's our first year living in a house (having moved from an apartment in Brooklyn to a house in Westchester this past year) so I am pretty excited about getting some trick-or-treaters at my house. We already bought plenty of candy at Costco, and got a few decorations as well for our porch to let people know we're a friendly house.

Now I'm thinking instead of a costume, maybe I'll wear something orange. But I don't have a lot of orange in my wardrobe, which got me wondering if a lot of plus size stores have orange clothes in stock right now, which they do. Amber Riley of Glee - Plus Size Fabulous

I am addicted to the TV show Glee right now, if you haven't heard of it, you can read recaps of recent episodes on Television Without Pity. One of the best singes on the show is Amber Riley - who happens to be plus size. Although she is not the main female lead, every time she busts out with a song, my jaw just drops. She is a really funny, likeable character. Although her size is referenced occasionally on the show, it's not done negatively and what I really like is that she is portrayed as an attractive, confident girl with a great wardrobe (which she is!). Here are a few snaps of her, both from off the set and on:

I wish I could tell you what designers she is wearing in the pics above, but I have no clue unfortunately. I did find a few similar pieces if you like her style:

Wallis - British Limbo Sized Clothing

Just found out about a cool UK site called Wallis that I read about on 100% People (a very cool plus size site).

Wallis sells clothes in sizes 8-20 UK, which would translate to about 6-18 US. However, when I matched up their size chart to the Beauty Plus Power Standard Plus Size compiled chart it looks as though an approximate plus size 20 could fit into their 20 (45-38-48).

Their clothes are H.O.T. Maybe because they range in size and cover the skinnier girls we get the benefit of the extra style (that you know all of plus girls want but often don't see enough of!)

Here are my current covets:

The prices aren't too bad, the gloves & bracelet are each £20.00 (about $30 US) and the purple coat is £65.00 (about $100). I checked and they do ship to the US (yippee!) so get your credit card ready. They have pages and pages of stuff, I had to stop myself from showing you 100 pictures! Also, they are rocking the 80s style pretty hard (who isn't these days, besides me) so if you are looking for a full on sequin experience, you know where to go!

We need more Plus Size Celebrities

I read this press release today from One Stop Plus sharing the results of their survey on plus size celebrities. They polled women about which from a list of 10 plus size celebrity was the sexiest: Queen Latifah, Whitney Thompson, Marilyn Monroe, Jennifer Hudson, Crystal Renn, Kirstie Alley, Jill Scott, Jennifer Coolidge, Kate Dilon and Mia Tyler.

I have some gripes with their list, first of all. How did they choose this list? Kirstie Alley is the opposite of sexy because of her clear self loathing. She ping pongs from fat to thin, sometimes championing her body, other times mocking and shaming herself over it. It's worse than Oprah.

Jennifer Coolidge, the comedic actress of films including Legally Blonde, American Pie and cult film Pootie Tang (seriously, rent it, it's so bad it's good) isn't someone I'd even necessarily think of as plus size. Sure she's voluptuous, fuller figured according to Hollywood standards, but I am not sure she's actually plus sized. Marilyn Monroe was a size 12-14 in the 1960s, but that was probably the equivilent of today's size 8. And do we seriously need to throw a dead person into the mix? The rest of the celebs are all women who are alive and famous today.

I dig Queen Latifah, the winner of the survey, because she has managed to appear on tons of magazine covers, have her own cosmetics campaign and make a splash on the red carpet as a plus size woman - something that isn't very easy to do, and she does it all looking lovely most of the time. And J-Hud (Jennifer Hudson) has done a lot to help advance plus size women in the media (although, I'm still a little upset that Andre Leon Talley dressed her in that hideous gold bolero jacket for the Oscars the year she won for Dreamgirls).

Other than singer Jill Scott, the other women are plus size models: Whitney Thompson, the plus size model who won America's Next Top Model, Kate Dillon, one of the first plus size supermodels, Mia Tyler, beautiful sexy bad girl daughter of Aerosmith's Steven Tyler - and Crystal Renn, author of the recent memoir Hungry, is an absolutely breathtakingly gorgeous woman, she'd probably have my vote out of all these girls.

I wanted to bring up here all the other gorgeous, sexy plus size famous women that could have been on this list. I came up with Adele, an incredible British singer, and Jordin Sparks, American Idol winner, but then I was drawing a bit of a blank. Umm...there's a cute plus girl on Glee now...there's that girl who starred in Hairspray on Broadway, and the one who starred in the movie.....there's Betto Ditto, but she's so out there in her sweaty spandex glory that I don't know that middle America would qualify her as sexy, although I'm sure she is to some....

Point is, I am drawing a blank. Where are all my plus size hotties? Let's rule out models for now, and go to the drawing board of actreses and singers. There simply aren't that many of them. We need more! We need more hot sexy plus size girls in pop culture. Is there anyone out there I should have on my radar? Let me know!

It's getting cold out, which means we are moving into sweater territory soon. Me, my winter wardrobe is a little boring. It's cute, it's classic, but it's boring - cashmere v-necks and turtlenecks in all the colors of the rainbow. But with solids like that, you really need to make it more fun.

1980's fashions are all over the place. I recently saw an editorial in a popular women's fashion magazine that was all neon, leggings, side ponytails, pointy shoe boots, appliqued sweaters and all sorts of big graphic pattern tees. And I am not loving it..... I don't see anything wrong with pulling inspiration from another era, but why the total rip off? I think that choosing a few 80s nostalgia pieces to pepper your wardrobe is a much better nod to fashion's past than a head to toe flashback. Glamour's November Issue to Feature More Plus Models

Glamour Magazine recently caused a major boost to plus size positivity with one 3x3 image of plus size model Lizzie Miller nude, with her (gasp) tummy roll showing. It was a more genuine, real picture of a woman's body than is usually seen in magazines and it sure did cause an uproar. It was covered everywhere from The Today Show to Oprah Radio and lead to a general outpouring of support and enthusiasm from women & men around the country wanting to see MORE - more real women, more real bodies!

Glamour has always been more enclusionary of body sizes than many magazines. They routinely include plus size fashion options (although not normally in their editorials) and have featured some plus size models in the past. When the Lizzie Miller photo created all this media attention, they embraced the notion of taking it a step further to show that body positivity was something they really felt strongly about.

In November they will be running a whole story and pictorial featuring 7 nude plus size models.

I am loving all the other plus size fashion bloggers out there, one of my favorites right now is Young, Fat & Fabulous, written by a 23 year old plus size fashionista. Thanks to her, I've just learned about a new plus size line from Spain called Kanak The clothes on their site are crazy 80s right now, I am not sure if that's their consistent style or just their current collection. At first I was confused because their sizes go S-XXL, but then I figured out that S is the equivilent of a size 12-14.

What do you think of the clothes?

I am sort of torn so far but they are edgy, and that's something I like to see, so I'll be watching them!

I happened to stumble across a new site today, Kingley&Posh.com. First of all, who happens to be modeling the line but Beauty Plus Power favorite and our Luscious calendar cover girl Fluvia. Fluvia is one of the most beautiful plus size models out there, and she has a great curvy figure. It looks like they have been in business since 2008, but I'm not sure they've had the site the whole time.

Kiyonna launches new site

One of my favorite plus size brands, Kiyonna has relaunched their website with a new site design and it is looking sharp.

If you aren't familiar with Kiyonna, they are known for their simple chic designs in wearable, soft fabrics. They make lovely dresses that are incredibly wearable as well as tops, jeans and more.

I don't know if its me or if they added a lot of product for the re-launch but the new site navigation made me feel like they had a lot more products than they did before. Here are a couple of the pieces I like the best:

Badgley Mischka Plus Size!

No, the title of this blog is not a joke. Bloomingdales is currently carrying 2 Badgley Mischka plus size dresses. Is this the beginning of something, or simply just a toe in the water? I have no idea but I am excited. Here is one of the dresses featured:

I did some digging after I saw this dress on Bloomingdales and was able to discover that apparently Badgley Mischka also does bridesmaids dresses and those come in plus sizes too! I never knew B.M. did bridesmaids, and I was surprised to see how affordable the dresses were (all things considered) - around $250ish. Other than that so far I have a wall in my sleuthing, but I will continue on in hopes of bringing you more news.

In the meantime, how can we convince Marc Jacobs to do plus. There are unspeakable things I would do for Marc Jacobs plus sizes... or Tracy Reese... Dolce & Gabbana....oh how the list goes on!

I am DETERMINED to get a pair of wide calf boots this year. Every year I look jealously at the girls strutting around Manhattan (and my office) wearing the cutest boots. I say I'm going to get a pair, and then I don't. This is because: I am afraid of heels (no balance for this fashionista), I am worried I will look like an orange on a toothpick if I tuck my jeans into my boots (I've got some big hips) and I am concerned about fit (because I will be ordering them as opposed to trying them on at a shoe store.) Lane Bryant, Icon?

Lane Bryant is promoting a new collection on their website and in stores called the ICON Collection. The premise is that the new collection is "inspired by the runways of Paris, Milan and London". It's supposed to be more of a designer line, with fabrics and prices to match. I was interested in seeing what they would do with this, but I have to say that I am less than impressed with the first round of designs on site:

The Cold-Shoulder Silk Blouse pictured above is $98. I don't see anything particularly designer about it, and it doesn't really correspond to fall trends much, except maybe that purple is a big color for fall. To me, it's just another plus size tunic.

Instead, what about this ECI Ruffle Print Lace Top, $72 at Nordstrom. This shirt hits the purple note for fall, and also includes fabric embellishment, in the form of tiered ruffles, which is very hot.

Below is the Grey Check Duffle coat from Evans UK, £65.00 (they ship to the US). This jacket incorporates a number of fall trends - the shorter, less structured jacket, the definition of the shoulders, and the plaid, all of which were seen on the runways.

Ed Hardy Plus Sizes - Played Out?

Ed Hardy is EVERYWHERE. I feel like this designer brand popped out of nowhere and just became ubiquitous. Ed Hardy flip flops, hand bags, jeans, t-shirts, kittens, blah blah. To me, the line jumped the shark when Jon Gosselin, formerly of Jon & Kate (Plus 8) was seen in France with Ed Hardy designer Christian Audigier, apparently to discuss either a biker or kids line (?).

I recently discovered that the Ed Hardy clothing line is based on the artwork of Don Ed Hardy. I also found out that Christian Audigier is no stranger to brands that oversaturate the market - he's the designer of the Von Dutch collection (remember those trucker hats?).

So I guess it's sort of inevitable that Ed Hardy now does plus sizes. For between $60-90 you can get an Ed Hardy t-shirt at Macys, among other places. I can't decide if this is a good thing or not. I personally won't be buying into this trend, but I'm happy that if my plus size sisters want to splash this brand across themselves, they at least have the option now.

Skorch Magazine Returns!

A new plus size magazine is going to print December 1st! Skorch Magazine has been an online presence in a few different forms over the last few years, catering to plus size fashionistas. It looks like their dream of becoming a print publication is coming to fruitition. Right now on their site, they are featuring a digital "mini mag" which reminds me a little bit of Lucky for the plus size girl. It features mostly product shots of cute, affordable plus size clothes. They also have a couple of articles, including one with their cover model, Trice, from the Dance Your Ass Off TV Show.

The print version is supposed to launch in December in print and as a digital download. They are pre-selling subscriptions now for $25 a year. I am not sure what to expect, but I think that if they follow their web format somewhat that it could turn out well - it would certainly be aimed at a younger, more fashion conscious audience than previous plus size publications have targeted. It makes me a little nervous to see a new magazine launch during a recession, since print mags are REALLY hard to keep profitable, but I would think Skorch founder Jessica Kane, a true full figured fashionista and businesswoman, has probably done a lot of planning that should help make the publication a success.

To be successful, she is really going to need subscribers. The publishing industry is based on circulation size - that's what helps attract advertisers to your mag, and the advertisers are what really keep you in print. I'd like to encourage my blog readers to check out her publication when it launches, and if you like it, even just a little, please consider subscribing. If we can prove that there is viability to the plus size magazine market it will go a long way towards pushing others in this direction and into plus size fashion in general.

Plus Model Crystal Renn's new book: Hungry

If you read this blog, chances are you are a plus size fashionista and therefore familiar with Crystal Renn. She is one of the most famous plus size models working today. She has done ad campaigns for Torrid, Evans UK, and Lane Bryant to name a few. She's walked the runway for Jean Paul Gaultier. She's been on the cover of Harper's Bazaar Russia and Elle Italia. She's been in multiple editions of Vogue, been shot by world famous photographers Steven Meisel, Patrick Demarchelier and Ruven Afenador. For a plus size model, she's been there, done that.

Now she's written a book about her experiences as a straight size model starving herself, and as a plus size model finding acceptance and success. I am really looking forward to reading this book and hoping there are lots of pretty pictures too. Check it out.

I just stumbled randomly across a site I've never heard of before that has plus size clothes in sizes up to 3X and was very pleasantly surprised. The site is KJordan.com and it totally looks British, but everything is in US dollars, so I am not sure. It reminds me kind of Ann Taylor Loft or New York & Co, the prices are affordable and the clothes are simple yet stylish. The site sells mens & women's clothing, straight sizes and plus sizes, plus cute accessories. Here are a few pieces I found online that I liked:

So I know Zappos is the go-to place for shoes, what with their gloriously large selection of sizes, styles and price points, and their free overnight shipping (both ways) and their awesome selection of wide calf boots, but I didn't realize they had started selling clothes. And apparently, plus size clothes too!

I saw a few things on their site that I liked, such as this:

I found the top above by searching their plus size clothing selection. I then tried to shake it up by removing that filter, but searching for size 16, and came across a lot more stuff (note: most of the results were for straight size 16, not a plus size 16, but there are lots of plus girls who fit into straight size 16s on occasion). They must not have their size filters working perfectly, because I came across this adorable plus size dress in this search that hadn't come up in my plus size search:

Drab to Fab: Plus Size Sweater Dress

I am kind of intrigued by this dress. The concept is great - plus size sweater dress, with a cute cowl neck. The shape is pretty nice too, and it's Calvin Klein. But the color is just a little...blah, I think.

I think to spice it up you could wear it with some really funky bracelets:

I am not usually a label whore, but I love Marc Jacobs, so I thought these Marc by Marc Jacobs Bracelets ($98 each at Nordstrom) could be a good addition.

Then you could wear some funky tights in a bright color like Peacock blue, and then some shoes like these:

These patent leather shoe booties are all the rage right now, so as long as you'll already be wearing the label whore bracelets and the very "now" bright tights, might as well sex it up with these shoes!

Put it all together and I think you've got yourself a cute fall outfit.

I came across this very cute jumper/high waisted skirt with suspender set from Chic Star that I thought was very cute for fall:

The High Waisted Suspender Skirt is only $32.95 at Chic Star and comes in plus sizes 18-28.

I think this skirt would be adorable with a tie neck blouse, or just a cute little tank or short sleeve shirt. This style will flatter hourglass figures, as well as those with slim hips as long as they aren't too busty on top. This would not be a recommended style for girls with fuller tummies, but there are plenty of other cute styles on this site for other body types.

This can be a flattering look on plus size bodies, especially if you have good legs. Here is a plus size dress I found on PlusSizeFix.com (formerly Belle Avenue)that's of a pretty similar style.

Kaneesha - Plus Size Indian Fashions

I have this great site in my directory called Kaneesha that I don't think I've ever written about before. The site sells Indian Fashions such as Saris/Choli Skirts, Churidar Suits, Salwar Kameez and more. Now, if you have no idea what the items are that I just mentioned, no worries. Indian style has influenced Western fashions for decades - many of today's tunics and rich fabrics borrow generously from Indian fashion.

What's very cool is that the site features a pretty extensive selection of plus size items. The outfit below is called a Churidar Suit, but I think you can wear the dress separately from the pants to get even more out of the outfit. Isn't it pretty?

Amazing Danish Plus Size Line: Carmakoma

I just stumbled upon this absolutely insanely delicious plus size clothing line from Denmark. Yes Denmark. It's called Carmakoma. I honestly think I will be ordering things from their website, once I figure it all out, because the clothes are ridiculously stylish (they have a currency converter and ship worldwide). The line looks to be actually only sizes 10-20, so it's not a full plus range, but its totally rad. Don't freak out about the sizes saying S-XL. A Small is a size 10. Lovely, no? Check it out:

I blog the gamut, from the $900 raincoat to the $20 dress. Today I figured I'd mention Alight's killer clearance sale. They have a whole section of items that are under $15! They are final sale, but for that price, if it doesn't fit, it's no great loss - and surely you can find a friend to gift it to. Here are a couple of my faves:

The design has some little abstract skulls in it, which I thought were pretty neat.

I'm a little disturbed by the porn star mannequin, but I think the top is quite cute. It's still available in size 1X and 3X.

I love this jewel green color. It looks like you might need a camisole underneath this, but it's an adorable dress, and wraps are usually very flattering.
